In the many years of development and more recently since I've started teaching & mentoring, I get a lot of questions in regards to the stack and the settings that I use.
Generally, my favorite OS to work on is MacOS but I swap consistently between Mac and Windows, because my Windows machine is the gaming rig and I can do things easier there than on Mac. But for everything work related, I go with Apple products, albeit their pricing point is (I would say it was) higher.
Apps
- VSCode for everything From time to time I dabble with Fleet, when learning Rust as I feel the "Smart Mode" does a better job at indexing libraries and helps out better with autocomplete
- Hyper (Windows) as my terminal
- Warp (Mac)Classy & lovely terminal, interesting features out of the box, AI automplete, using it at the moment as my main terminal
- iTerm (Mac) as my stable backup in case some serious bugs creep up in Warp
- DBeaver Should satisfy most of your UI DB needs
- Postman should help with any API calls
Others
- Fira Code as my main programming font - besides it's beautry, I like to look for a monospaced font that has font ligatures . Usually when you go with ligatures, you don't really come back
- Notes (Mac) iOS native app for my notekeeping, brainfarts, shopping lists and everything in between
- Brave as my main browser of choice (Before that it was Chrome and before that for most years I''ve used Opera)
- Discord as one of my base communication tools
- Spotify For my music needs
- GitLab as my main Git repo storage with GitHub as the backup Git service.
- f.lux For late night coding sessions
- Signal for private messaging
Extensions for VSCode
Now extensions are subjective because they can change, some people might preffer X instead of Y, but here goes a general list:
- Material Icon Theme In general I recommend having any kind of icon theme, usually better than the default.
- One Dark Pro The Darker version works well for me
- CodeSnap For whenever I need to do a nice looking snippet, codesnap is there to save me
- Docker Although I don't use it as much as I previously did, it's still a useful tool to have to start/stop/visualize your docker containers
- DotENV I would have hoped to have this syntax support by default, but it's not (yet?); so a extension to help with this
- ESLint For all the missing linting needs that you might have in VSCode
- ImportCost Very useful when you want to quickly see how much a import will add to your bundle
- NpmDepencency I don't know why this is not a feature
